The manuals fine generally in that regard. And the setup instructions are excellent (IMO). It's just is says (can't remember exactly) that it works great with the G25, yet there's this clutch problem that apparently everyone knows about - well actually some obviously didn't - but still hasn't been fixed in the latest release, and isn't mentioned. For a while I thought my G25 was malfunctioning.
FWIW, the only thing about the setup that caught me out (maybe just dense) is that you need to turn the wheel all the way to the left and then to the right (beyond the range of the graphic) to ensure centering. (Which, btw, is a useful feature because it corrects the tendency for Logitechs to hang slightly of centre). Don't think that's there? Just a thought.
That's already been posted - really should read the threads. (Was finished but can't resist shooting fish in a barrel). And anyway, despite all these threads, patch X has just been released and the manual seems to think everything is peachy with the G25.
AndroidXP: Interesting. That explains a few other irregularities. Thing is. In the heat of battle, it's quite easy to get the shift and clutching out of time - which I only first recognized when I tried GTL again.
Thisnameistaken: Thanks! Hope I haven't put you off my show.
A less charitable person would probably say 'fan-boys still can't read'.
It's not just about stalling. You can move the gear stick into gear WITHOUT the clutch and THEN put your foot on the clutch AFTERWARDS and it THEN selects the gear. :nut:

Well, they can do remarkable things in genetics these days, but I think there are even easier solutions. The situation's not an act of God, is it?

Really? I think LFS' physics is very good. Did you hear that everyone...get him!! Maybe you should try GTL then...I hear that's quite good.
Seriously folks, LFS has a lot of good things. But it seems the priorities are a bit bizarre looking at all the suggestions. I'd recommend they ignore them all except mine.
And I know it's not what's intended, but I'd like an AI I can race with. On-line racers, can't be relied upon to be realistically responsible.
It really does give the game away when people are reacting but clearly haven't even read what's written properly. I've said twice... I own GTL!
And how much more basic can you get than clutch? Steering? I'd have thought functional controls are the most basic of basics. If you think that doesn't matter, good luck with the missionary work on the GTL forums.
I don't like the term "eyecandy". We're talking sensory input here. It's what makes it real or not. Apart from physical forces (obviously) it's visual data and sound that makes the experience what it is in RL after all.
Btw, I'd actually prioritize sound improvements for LFS well ahead of visuals FWIW.
I have GTL, and find it's almost completely unresponsiveness to inputs during a slide (presumably what people mean by "canned physics") which is precisely why I'm frustrated about the basics in LFS when it's physics is so good. Come on, a functional clutch in a sim isn't comparable to environmentals - night/rain.
But after a couple of weeks of LFS, I tried GTL again, and was frankly disappointed to find that these supposedly aesthetic irrelevances of graphics and sound actually add a huge amount to immersion and entertainment value for GTL. Probably over 50% of an action film is sound. It makes a huge difference.
Sorry, but this is ridiculous on a "sim". G25: engage gear stick into gear with no clutch, then press clutch and it selects! Also, occasional drops off in revs for no reason I can fathom.
The demo's worth an awful lot more than 'free', but despite it's physics shortcomings, you can buy GTL for £10 UK these days, and it has superior graphics, sound, AI (LFS' are pointless it seems to me) and a clutch that works and stalls....which is why I haven't upgraded LFS. Get the basics right first...surely??
But I thought all my previous shortcomings were the fault of Gran Turismo and GTL's physics. I assumed I'd automatically be a genius at this from the start.
Hang on, the "contents" of the zip file is a folder (SMX_PTH_S2P) full of files. Is it this folder, or just the files in it that should be copied to the "smx"? :homersimp
I did try copying the files on their own, but windows said there were some hidden ones amongst them so I didn't do it.
It says it can't find Blackwood. Instructions say:
"Create a "smx" folder inside your "lfs\data" folder and place the contents of this zip file in that folder."
But there's already an "smx" folder. The "contents of the Zip" is folder "SMX_PTH_S2U". I've tried putting that in the original "smx". And copying "Blackwood_3DH.smx" separately to the "smx". What am I doing wrong?
Didn't want to get into all this really, but I give up; I can't get within 4.5 sec of the (XRG) WR 1:32:750 with my G25 and H-shifter
I think this Dell's fixed at 60Hz, but I wouldn't want to run at non-native anyway. I did try GTL (Vsync off) on a CRT, and it still juddered at 85Hz. One other thing though, if the GTL (or GTR2, Fear etc.) FPS got much above 100, then it became smooth at that time even on the LCD. Conversely, the lower the FPS, the worse the juddering effect was. But that's a much worse effect than LFS' with vsync turned on. But as I said, with vsync on, GTL (and GTR2 and Fear etc.) are completely smooth...just not LFS. Bit of a conundrum! I tried Boris' cunning plan of turning down the game FPS to 62, but no joy.
Difficult to corroborate your theory because looking again with vsync turned off, it really is doing the same juddering thing that I see with GTL, GTR2, and Fear, which is actually a bigger effect than the LFS one with vsync-on.
Anyway, as pointed out, I might as well upgrade to the full version, and it's not that bad anyway. I really like the physics. Engine sounds are the weak point though (IMO).
When the scenery moves fast, e.g. when it pans as you turn a corner, it's not completely smooth. It has a fast, small regular vibration type effect to the motion. You could even misinterpret it as a vibration of the car, but it's not because if you're stationery other cars do it as they move past you.
Now, in other games I've had a similar effect but only when Vsync was turned off. But as I've 24" widescreen LCD, and tearing annoyed me, I always set it to "on". But in LFS, I'm getting this vibration effect even with Vsync turned on. My FPS would be around 90-100 the whole time if I turned Vsync-off - to give you an idea.
Is this my PC? Or is it LFS?
It's not diabolical, but slightly detracts from the immersion.
I have tried pretty much every PC tweak known. And the mobo was changed from a EVGA Nforce680i to no effect. I have triple-buffering enabled via Rivatuner btw.
Anyone else see this effect?

Nathan, you're a genius! That did it. It was turning the wheel all the way to left and right - which I done the first time to get it centered but didn't occur to me to do again.
I'd already got the FFB working on the rumble strips and grass, as I'd said.
Tried LFS for the first time a few days ago (patch X), but am having G25 problems. The G25 works OK with GTL and GTR2 (BTW).
I tried setting up LFS and Logitech profiler according to manual, but initially LFS wouldn't recognize pedals. Eventually I pulled the USB plug from PC, and then it did work, and I assigned according to wiki manual. I'm not really sure whether the FFB was working at all at that point, on reflection. But there were no effects at all on the rumble strips.
Next day, I had to re-assign pedal settings as LFS had forgotten them. I then randomly fiddled with logitech profiler settings, and suddenly the FFB was working perfectly: rumble strip effects, and much better (IMO) than GTL. :woohoo:
Next day, I reverted logitech settings back to try GTL. When I set them back again for LFS, it had forgotten pedal assignments again, but now I couldn't get the LFS wheel rotation to match the physical wheel at all. A few degrees on the G25 turned the LFS cockpit wheel through around 90 degrees. I reiterate, the settings are correct according to the manual. Both LFS and the profiler are set to 720 degrees (or as close as I can set the profiler). I've checked settings and fiddled, but nothing makes any difference; full lock is about 30 degrees on G25!
